Crave Locally’s Take

  • Family-Friendly

Dogs are welcome in a separate outdoor dog section only.

Bull Run brings a historical dimension to a winery afternoon: preserved Hillwood ruins and artifacts connect the setting to the neighboring Manassas battlefield. It offers a natural starting point for an outing that pairs Virginia wine with an interest in the landscape’s past.

Families and adults have distinct spaces here. Children are welcome in designated family areas, while the 21+ lawn and patio offer an option for adults who prefer their own setting. Dogs have a more limited welcome: they must stay in a separate outdoor dog section, rather than joining you throughout the property.

The winery offers meats, cheeses, spreads and crackers, with Bull Run Pizza advertised daily and food trucks adding choices on selected days.

About the Owners

Jon and Kim Hickox founded the winery after purchasing a farm in 2008. Their shared interest in history and Jon’s connection to Northern Virginia farmland shaped the project: a working winery that preserves a sense of the countryside around it.

History of the Venue

The winery opened in June 2012. The surviving foundations of Hillwood and displays of locally recovered artifacts make the property’s earlier story visible, rather than leaving history as a backdrop to the wine.

Business Philosophy

The winery describes its work as both Virginia winemaking and preservation of pastoral Fairfax County. That combination gives the visit two threads to explore: the agricultural craft of wine and the history of the place where it is made.

What’s in the Glass

Bull Run’s selection ranges from Chardonnay, Lilly’s Viognier, Traminette and Vidal Blanc to Petit Verdot, Chambourcin, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Delaney offers a sweeter white-blend option, while Meritage and Reconciliation explore different red-blend styles. Estate rosé and sparkling wines add further choices.

For something different, Sweet Victory is a late-harvest Petit Manseng, Tannat Fort is fortified with grape brandy, and Cannon Shot brings hard apple cider into the lineup. The menu also includes non-alcoholic options. Selections change, so a particular wine isn’t guaranteed on any given visit.
